Nine Lumination Network staff members graduate

Nine Lumination Network staff members graduated with a degree in journalism and new media. Each of them played a major role in producing content for Lumination, as they have written stories for the website, worked on the TV newscast and been heard on the radio.

image1Chad Johnson is a journalism and new media major from Edmond, Oklahoma. Alongside being on the men’s basketball team, Johnson was an anchor, reporter, writer and videographer for Lumination.

Johnson said his favorite part about being involved in Lumination was getting to know everyone better. “It’s also allowed me to open up and show people another side of me while perfecting my journalism skills,” he said.

Johnson said he plans to go to graduate school at Lipscomb, then eventually become an ESPN reporter or a sports journalist. “Mainly, just finding something I love doing and being happy,” he said.

 

 

3c4cd88Erika Thornsberry is a broadcast and new media major with a minor in management from St. Marys, Ohio. Along with playing on and helping out with the women’s basketball team as well as interning with the Nashville Predators, she also has written for Lumination Network and been a part of the weekly newscasts.

Thornsberry said her favorite part about the communication department is how close and caring everyone is. “Special thanks to Mr. McGee for helping me throughout these four years,” she said. “He helped me in the classroom, getting different jobs around campus and different internships. He has really helped me grow as a student.”

After graduation, Thornsberry plans to attend The University of Northwestern Ohio to get her MBA.

 

MSmith Smile 2 AllenMadeline Smith is a journalism and new media major and a political science minor from Lilburn, Georgia. During her time at Lipscomb she served as the vice president of the social club Delta Sigma. She was a writer for Lumination Network and also served as an on-air talent for the Lumination TV newscast.

“I have loved how tight-knit our department is,” she said. “All of the teachers and students do a great job of balancing work and play. Everyone is very supportive of each other’s careers. I have found many opportunities to grow in my craft that I would not have had without our amazing teachers and staff.”

After graduation, Smith said she plans to become a television anchor/reporter.

 

 

 

HEAD SHOTBrianne Welch is a journalism and new media major and a management minor from Canton, Georgia. Welch played for Lipscomb softball and participated in SAAC. She served as Lumination Network’s managing editor for over two years and also participated in the the TV newscast for one semester.

She said her favorite part about the communication department is the people. “I have loved the community of the communication department here,” she said. “We are like a little family, and work extremely well together. I have had so much fun editing with everyone in the newsroom, and I have learned so much about journalism.”

After graduation Welch plans to apply for sports broadcasting jobs and spend time with her family. “I am going to be applying while spending time with my family, because I have not had a chance to since I have played softball for four years and haven’t ever really had a break,” she said.

 

JAMIN_CRAIG-25Jamin Craig is a journalism and new media major and a theater minor from Nashville, Tennessee. During his time at Lipscomb he has served as a student technician for ETS, performed in three main-stage theater shows and participated in other shows on the tech crew. Craig was the technical director for Lumination TV newscast. He also produced stories in all three formats Lumination Network offers – online, radio and newscast.

He said his favorite part of the communication department is the people. “I have made so many amazing friends here,” he said. “The teachers are great and understanding, and helpful. Everyone just clicks here. No other way to describe it.”

Craig has received a potential job offer from Stonebrook Media. His other plans for after graduation may include moving to Ohio to work at Kings Island. “I may move to Ohio and work at Kings Island for a summer or two just because I’m such a theme park nerd, but as far as media production jobs go, I’m just going to try to market myself as a freelance media production specialist and see what happens,” he said.

 

presets-1Carly Bergthold is a journalism and new media major and an International studies minor from Nashville, Tennessee. While at Lipscomb, Bergthold participated in the music department and ESL tutoring. She was an anchor for the Lumination TV newscast and wrote stories for Lumination Network.

Her favorite part about the communication department was how small the department was. “Everyone knows each other,” she said. “My teachers are also my mentors, and they push me to do better than I thought I could ever do. And it’s not everywhere you can practice being on-camera every week.”

After graduation, Bergthold will move to Belgrade, Serbia, to teach English and produce media for a church.

 

 

Sarah_McGee1-38Sarah McGee is a journalism and new media major from Shelbyville, Tennessee. During her time at Lipscomb, she was involved with the IDEAL and Best Buddies programs. She also interned for NPR during her senior year. Her Lumination involvement includes newscast and writing stories/producing packages.

McGee said her favorite part of the communication department was getting to have classes with her father, Dr. Mark McGee. “I’ve grown up watching him teach, so it was neat to be a student,” she said.

After graduation she will be moving to Disney World to participate in the Disney college program. After that she plans to attend grad school to get her degree in special education.

 

 

 

Screen Shot 2015-05-02 at 11.39.49 AMJesica Parsley is a journalism and new media major from Dresden, Tennessee. She served on Baja Missions trips and the student advisory board, in addition to playing intramural basketball and softball during her time at Lipscomb. Parsley was a staff writer for Lumination Network for three years. She also participated in the TV newscast and was a commentator and sideline reporter for Lumination radio.

She said her favorite part about the communication department is how close knit everyone is. “We are always helping each other with projects, stories and life in general,” she said.

After graduation, Parsley plans to land a job in sports journalism.

He said his favorite part about the communication department was the design and implementation of Lipscomb sports on radio.

After graduation, Jones said he plans to work and attend grad school.
